Tutors and kids: the heart of Bound Together

Tutors volunteer for one day per week, giving an hour of support to a child.

Bound Together is an after school tutoring and nutrition program located on-line and at All Saints Episcopal Church, 171 W. Pike Street in Pontiac, MI for children in grades 1-8, who come to us Tuesday – Thursday from Pontiac schools, schools of choice as well as area charters.  Know a child who might join us?  Write us at director@boundtogetherpontiac.org, and we’ll let you know about availability — families may apply online here for 2023-24, or download a PDF application! And if you are interested in tutoring, or know someone who is: our volunteer application is available here!

Our Focus

  • Math

  • STEAM

  • Reading

  • Reading Comprehension

The children are tutored by mentors who come to us from backgrounds in  teaching, engineering, retired professionals of all kinds, many from church groups and civic organizations — all united by the desire to make a difference in the life of a child.

While tutors provide homework support, our “Top Ten” effort prioritizes reading aloud and working on basic math facts for ten of each tutoring hour, using the 1:1 time we have with students in a way that truly supports what teachers and kids are working accomplish at school every day. Our students grades 1-5 have access to the LEXIA reading support program that comes to us from Pontiac READS!, a phonics-based approach that gives us access to resources from the Oakland Intermediate School District as well as Oakland University. Each child also has a personalized education plan addressing the areas that they need help with and supporting both  students and tutors with daily activities.

Tutors typically commit to one afternoon per week, so that each child has three more caring adults in their lives — meaning that we need 90+ volunteer tutors to make the program vital! Interested? Click on “Get Involved” for more information!
